What it looks like

  • Violent or sexual material
  • Hate, extremism or misinformation
  • Gambling and betting promotions
  • Content that encourages self-harm

You may notice: A child who seems frightened or distressed after going online, or keeps returning to upsetting material.

02 / Respond

How to help

  1. Pause the content. Leave the feed or chat. Don’t search for more distressing material together.

  2. Listen to their feelings. “How did it make you feel?” Thank them for telling you. Don’t punish them for what appeared.

  3. Choose the next step. Review settings together. Take self-harm talk seriously and seek help; call 911 for immediate danger.
